Growing up Catholic you see Jesus nailed to the cross everywhere. Most of us become desensitized to it. Instead of it being a constant reminder of the ultimate sacrifice Jesus made for us, it just fades into the background. When you grow up in a religious household where from day one you are taught that Jesus died for our sins so that we can be forgiven and be with him in heaven one day...you unfortunately take for granted this gift.
