The day Ayden turned 4, (prior to, he never had the opportunity to celebrate a birthday) we wanted to make sure it was extra special! I remember Gigi pulling him to the side and handing him a card with 4 bucks in it and Ayden was so happy and saying, “You get money on your birthday??!!!” His face just lit up!!! Right before he blew his candles out on the cake, he literally cried. I have learned that kids should feel celebrated and not just on birthdays but as often as we can with verbal praise, or if they allow; physical touch like a high five or a hug! I also learned an important lesson that day, when any child after Ayden came into our home, I would always ask them how they felt about birthday celebrations. Oftentimes, kids in foster care can have traumatic experiences surrounding birthdays and are not always a cause for a celebration.
