In 2012, February 6 was designated by the UN General Assembly as the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). This practice involves altering and injuring the female genitalia without any medical reason. FGM is a universal issue primarily concentrated in 30 countries in Africa and the Middle East. It is also practiced in some countries in Asia and Latin America. Female genital mutilation persists among immigrant populations living in Western Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. FGM is recognized internationally as a violation of human rights and the health and integrity of girls and women. This year's theme is "Partnership with Men and Boys to Transform Social and Gender Norms to End FGM." The aim is to eradicate this practice by 2030. The info is an excerpt from the UN's Guidance on FGM and their mission to eradicate FGM by 2030.
