At the end of a 10-day trek and only hours from Everest Base Camp, 60 Minutes correspondent Cecilia Vega is feeling the effects of being at 17,600 feet above sea level. Every breath delivers only half the oxygen; she says it’s like breathing through a straw. Vega’s lips turn blue, a sign she’s not getting enough oxygen. “There it is. We did it,” Vega says as base camp comes into view. It sits on top of constantly shifting and melting ice. “This is where you try to not fall in the glacier lake,” she says, navigating a narrow passage.
