"Growing up where I’m from is not as hard as it sounds. As a kid, I was always tasked with the job of waking all my siblings up, getting them dressed for school and gathered at the bus stop. One day, as my siblings and I were heading to school, we took a different route. We were walking when a porch full of gang members asked, “Aye, you shorty, where you from?” We all ran. Where I’m from, the South Side of Chicago, that question is something you don’t want to answer.
