Thousands of people gathered to watch the Sun rise over Stonehenge on the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere. As the Sun rose over Wiltshire, UK, people sang, danced and played music while others took a quiet moment with the ancient stones. From today, the days will start to get longer and we will get more daylight. The stones are deliberately placed to line up with the Sun’s movements during the two solstices - summer and winter - marking the changing of the seasons. Because of this connection with the Sun, and due to burials found at the site, it’s thought to have played a spiritual role- even though no one really knows why Stonehenge was built.
