Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legal team is urging a federal appeals court in New York to overturn his prostitution-related convictions and order his immediate release from prison or reduce his sentence. In a new filing, his lawyers argue the judge improperly relied on evidence tied to charges Combs was acquitted of, including racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking, when determining his punishment.
Combs, 56, is currently incarcerated at a federal prison in New Jersey and is serving a four-year, two-month sentence after being convicted under the Mann Act, which prohibits transporting people across state lines for sexual activity. His lawyers say the sentence far exceeds what is typical for similar convictions and claim the judge acted like a “thirteenth juror” by making findings that contradicted the jury’s verdict.
