Federal immigration agencies are exploiting Washington’s lack of restrictions on license plate reading cameras to find out where and when we drive our cars, as a recent report from the UW Center for Human Rights shows. These devices, known as Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs), capture and store data from countless Washington drivers every day. Police departments buy these devices from companies like Flock Safety and Axon. Without regulations, out-of-state and federal agencies can access – and already have accessed – private data about Washingtonians. This puts everyday people and vulnerable communities – including immigrants, people seeking reproductive or gender-affirming care, and protesters – at risk. We need clear guardrails on who can access this data and how they use it. Join us in the fight for privacy – sign up for action alerts at the link in our bio.
