Do you remember what you were doing July 2023? You might not recall, but for 856 incarcerated people, it was the date a Washington law chose to leave them behind. You see, in 2023 Washington lawmakers passed a law to stop automatically punishing people with juvenile records twice. But this change failed to include the people who were already being punished twice – simply because they were sentenced, even just a day before, this law passed. This has nothing to do with their individual circumstances or rehabilitation journeys and merely comes down to a date. It is arbitrary. It is unfair. And it is how Washington has been operating for over two years. It does not have to be this way. Lawmakers can give people a fair shot and a chance to go home by passing the Fair Score Act. #FairScoreAct #WALeg
