Birthdays, college graduation, holidays. Bryin has celebrated countless milestones without his father, Brandin. His father is serving an overly long sentence because of a system called “juvenile points.” Up until 2023, judges had to automatically add time to a person’s sentence based on their juvenile record. Lawmakers stopped this practice in 2023, recognizing that it relied on racist stereotypes of children of color and did not improve safety. But the 2023 fix only applies to people sentenced after the date the law went into effect. That means, people like Brandin are currently being punished twice. We have a chance to fix this injustice by passing the Fair Score Act. Nothing can make up for lost time, but the Fair Score Act would give Brandin a chance at fairness and milestones with his son. #FairScoreAct #WALeg
