Every year, from December 14 to January 5, the audubonsociety holds a nationwide Christmas Bird Count (CBC) that helps protect species and their habitats by tracking long-term trends in bird populations. Audubon and other organizations use data collected in this long-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations, and to help guide conservation action. Deering Estate is part of the Biscayne Bay IBA (Important Bird Area) recognized as a globally important habitat for the conservation of bird populations. Deering Estate staff participated in the Kendall Christmas Bird Count on Sunday, December 21. The results from the Deering portion of the 2025 Kendall Christmas Bird Count are in. The count tallied 623 individual birds of 55 species this year. The best bird was a Western Tanager. This is only the second record for Deering Estate of this rare visitor to South Florida.
