NUMC served a greater percentage of patients on Medicaid in 2024 than any other hospital on Long Island, according to state data. And it served a greater combined percentage of patients on public insurance — Medicaid and Medicare — than any other hospital in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
By and large, hospitals lose money on treating patients who have public insurance. That’s one of the central challenges that NUMC faces as it works to find a more stable financial footing.
This is the second in a series of stories that will examine the hospital's finances and operations, diagnose the root causes of its dysfunction, and outline potential solutions to what has become one of Nassau County’s most intractable dilemmas.
