Long Island’s local roads are in worse condition than many other areas in the state — with 42% in “poor” or “fair” condition, compared to about 35% statewide, data shows. It highlights a persistent question asked by Long Island drivers: In one of the nation’s wealthiest regions, with taxes so high, why are there so many potholes? A Newsday analysis found that while Long Island spends a significant amount per mile of road, it spends the least of any region outside New York City based on population or traffic.
