Starting this fall, Long Island students will not be allowed to use internet-enabled devices such as smartphones, smartwatches and tablets for the entire school day, unless it is part of instruction. There will be exemptions for students with medical or other needs, such as using the phone for translation or family emergencies. Overall, Long Island educators agreed with the intent of the ban, but some worried about the short timeframe to implement it and how districts would address exemptions.
