NYU Langone surgeons have developed a minimally invasive, single-port, retroperitoneal approach that makes right-sided kidney donation safer and supports faster recovery.
Right-sided donor nephrectomy is traditionally more challenging because of the shorter renal vein. Using a single-port robotic system and retroperitoneal access, Dr. Lee C. Zhao and colleagues can now procure kidneys from either side without compromising outcomes.
Early results are strong:
• Six right-sided donor procedures completed, all with favorable short-term outcomes
• Some patients discharged the same day, significantly faster than the conventional laparoscopic approach
• Less postoperative pain and lower risk of ileus, thanks to retroperitoneal access
• Greater access to living donation for patients who may have previously been ineligible
Presented at AUA 2025, this technique has the potential to expand the donor pool and improve transplant access for more patients.
