"It's just nice to know that the bears are looking out for each other." A mother polar bear has adopted a lost cub in only the 13th case recorded in Canada's Manitoba area in almost 50 years. The five-year-old mother bear and her 10- to 11-month-old cubs were observed and captured along the Western Hudson Bay near Churchill, a town known for its polar bear population. More than 4,000 bears have been studied in the area over the last five decades and only in 12 other cases has a mother bear adopted a cub that isn't biologically hers. She was originally snapped and tagged with her only cub when she came out of her maternity den in spring, but in the fall, she emerged with a second cub.
