Canis Major (The Greater Dog) is home to more than just Sirius! šā
The first, fiery image š„ taken with the
#MIRI and
#NIRCam instruments on the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope, features the spiral galaxy NGC 2283. Webb gazed at the galaxy for 17 minutes to collect the data for this image, which is constructed from six snapshots taken with different near- and mid-infrared filters. These filters reveal the emission from NGC 2283ās stars and the light from clouds of hydrogen gas heated by young stars.
Also in Canis Major is this sprinkling of red and blue stars, the dwarf galaxy ESO 489-056, with two spiral galaxies colliding far beyond it. This scene was captured more than 10 years ago by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.
