Invisible disabilities like being deaf or hard of hearing often go unnoticed, but the effort behind the scenes is anything but invisible. I have always felt like a duck on a pond. On the surface I look calm and put together, underneath I am paddling like crazy just to keep up. Every conversation, every noisy room, every new environment takes more energy than most people will ever see. I tell parents this all the time in clinic. Your DHH kid may look “fine” on the outside, but their brain is working overtime. That extra effort can show up later as meltdowns, withdrawal, “attitude,” or shutting down. It is not them being difficult. It is them being exhausted. This is why I share my journey, not just for me, but for anyone who feels like they are paddling alone. You are not. 💙 What is one thing you wish others understood about invisible disabilities or listening fatigue?
