It's official: 'Slop' is the 2025 Word of the Year. š
Merriam-Webster has chosen the term ā defined as low-quality digital content produced en masse by AI ā to encapsulate the year's deluge of absurd videos, cheesy propaganda, and junky AI-written reports.
While it carries the wet, undesirable sound of slime and muck, slop offers a cultural shift from fear to mockery, subtly telling AI that when it tries to replace human creativity, the result often looks less than "superintelligent."
Other words that stood out in the lookup data included: 'gerrymander,' 'touch grass,' and 'performative,' reflecting continued engagement with politics, digital burnout, and social dynamics in 2025.
