The journey to Atka Bay is as memorable as observing the penguins themselves — a gradual approach that allows the environment and the sounds of the colony to unfold naturally. After a short flight along the ice shelf, the Baslers touch down some distance from the colony. We then approach the colony by PistenBully and then on foot. The stillness of the landscape slowly gives way to the commotion of the colony, as chirps and honks carry across the ice.
