Watching my children simply be children often reminds me how far I’ve come from being raised by a single mother in one of the toughest neighborhoods in Brooklyn. I don’t regret how I grew up. Everything I witnessed, experienced, or did out of necessity shaped me into the man I am today. But I also understand that my childhood wasn’t typical. I thank God every day for watching over and protecting that little boy who thought he was a man. I also thank God every day for the childhood we’re able to give our children… the freedom to be kids for as long as possible. Not rushed. Not hardened early. Not forced to jump off the porch and become adults before their time.
