In below-freezing temperatures, dozens jumped from the Mon Wharf into the river on New Year's Day for Pittsburgh's annual Polar Plunge. The decades-long tradition has at times seen hundreds come out to cleanse themselves of the previous year and start the new year strong. Some jumped in wearing bathing suits, while others went in fully clothed. People took turns taking the plunge, on their own or with a small group, helping each other safely get back to shore. Those who come back year after year say the plunge is just as much about the camaraderie as it is about the thrill.
