Swiss President Guy Parmelin said the country would observe five days of national mourning, calling a deadly fire at a bar in the Alpine resort of Crans-Montana one of the most traumatic events in Switzerland’s history.
“This was a tragedy of unprecedented scale,” Parmelin said, paying tribute to the many young lives lost and cut short.
The blaze broke out at around 1:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Le Constellation bar. The cause has not yet been confirmed, though some witnesses said the fire may have started after sparklers or flares were placed into champagne bottles. At least 40 people were killed and more than 100 injured, authorities said.
