Sands of Iwo Jima premiered on December 14, 1949, and follows a group of U.S. Marines from training to the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. The film earned four Academy Award nominations, including Best Actor for John Wayne, his first-ever Oscar nomination.

An award containing sand from Iwo Jima, presented to John Wayne by the Third Marine Division in 1954, is on display at the John Wayne: An American Experience Museum in the historic Fort Worth Stockyards, Texas. Also featured are Wayne’s Sergeant John M. Stryker costume and U.S. M1 helmet with a woodland camouflage cover, as well as a certificate of nomination for the Academy Award for Sands of Iwo Jima.
