Enhanced tax credits that helped reduce the cost of health insurance for the vast majority of Affordable Care Act enrollees have expired. About 130,000 people in Alabama are expected to lose their coverage if the credits aren’t renewed. A House vote expected in January could offer another chance, but there are no guarantees. Premiums for individuals enrolled in the ACA marketplace could rise by an average of 93% in the state. In a report released in October, the Commonwealth Fund estimated that Alabama could lose 9,100 jobs, mostly in the health care sector, if the subsidies expire. That’s the seventh highest amount of any state in the country.
