A pharmaceutical giant is currently developing a vaccine it hopes will be a powerful weapon against Lyme disease as soon as next year, as cases of the serious tick-borne illness continue to increase on Long Island and across parts of the northeast U.S. But a growing culture of vaccine hesitancy could stand in the way of public acceptance. Some people who received a 1990s Lyme disease vaccine called LYMErix complained of side-effects. But even after the FDA said the vaccine did not cause any injury, public opinion had turned.
