Our trail camera caught a rare sight last week!
Like many in central PA, Shaver's Creek battened down the hatches as wicked storms rolled through Stone Valley. Incredibly, one of our trail cams captured the moment the raging winds and torrential downpours took down a mature Eastern Hemlock along our Twin Bridges trail.
While it may be somber to see such a mighty tree come down, this hemlock is starting a new chapter in its life as an important resource for the forest. Mammals have a new path across Shaver's Creek, insects have a new home to bore, and plants have a new patch of sunlight underneath the canopy. With time, this mother tree will give new life to the ecosystem as she decomposes and releases her nutrients into the water and soil beneath her. Even destruction has its place in a healthy ecosystem.
We're lucky to bear witness to this special moment and the immense power of mother nature! We're wishing health and safety to all of our community throughout this powerful weather...
