"As a young girl learning English in a new country, I faced intense pressure and bullying with every hesitant word I spoke with my accent. Quickly, I realized I had to work twice as hard to be taken seriously. Inequity is real and systems can disable and disempower communities and young people like me. The U of A has provided countless opportunities, roles and platforms to become the woman I needed growing up: someone to understand and advocate for immigrant and marginalized families like mine across health care, research and academia. I have felt the weight of inequity, but I have witnessed the power of systems that can uplift and empower. I carry this purpose forward, striving to tear down the barriers that once held me back and to build spaces where others, like me, can rise boldly."
