Hear it #straightfromthehorsesmouth! Did you know that PET scan technology can be used to diagnose lameness in horses? Unlike other types of imaging, PET (positron emission tomography) scans show 3D, cross sectional images that are especially helpful in pinpointing the location and severity of an injury. PET scans require a radioactive tracer injection, where the tracer takes up in areas of increased inflammation and allows identification of bone or soft tissue damage. PET scans are also performed under standing sedation, making it a much safer and more accessible imaging technique than ones that require general anesthesia.
