We’re in the thick of weaning season, and a few of our foals have officially stepped into their new roles as weanlings.
Weaning typically begins around five to six months of age, when most foals are already quite self-sufficient. A nanny mare is introduced to the group a few weeks ahead of time, and when the moment comes, we gradually remove a few mares at a time—leaving the calm nanny mares behind to help ease the transition. The mares are moved to a paddock well out of sight and sound, and the weanlings usually buddy up quickly with their pasture mates.
It’s a big step—but one they’re more than ready for. 💙
