A great unrealized work of art by genius
#ChrisBurden. “Beam Drop,” executed in Art Park in 1971, in which he dropped enormous I-beams into cement from 150 feet, from a large crane.
A comment on Ab-Ex, Conceptualism, randomness, mayhem, danger, death, ecstasy, modernity, archaic ritual and ruins, and random aspects of beauty, that was supposed to be permanent but that was never done. Only here as a prototype.
‘’My idea is to play with these building blocks of order, to be impudent with them. I think people relate to that. …When the crane lets go of the beams, they seem to hang in mid- air for a full second, as if they’re trying to decide whether or not to fall,’’ he said. ‘’And when they fall, they come down quietly almost like dancers. There’s something real nice when those beams go down.’’
