Nearly 79 million Social Security recipients received a 2.8% cost of living adjustment this year, raising the average benefit by $56 per month. Monthly Social Security payments are distributed based on the recipient’s date of birth: people born between the 1st and the 10th receive benefits on the second Wednesday; 11th-20th on the third Wednesday; and 21st -31st on the fourth Wednesday. Supplemental Social Security payments are on a different schedule. They are paid on the first of each month except when that falls on a weekend or a holiday.
