#51. As the state of the world shifted, Bruce resiliently went to the Marines and fought in Vietnam. However, he heroically passed away in battle. After his passing, his dear friend and roommate Dick Butkus took the
#51 (wearing it throughout his NFL career) to honor Bruce. To this day, the football players at Glenbard West High School are called, collectively, The “Hitters”, to honor the way that Bruce played football and lived his life--always trying your hardest.
