David Bowie was inspired by Kendrick Lamar's 'To Pimp A Butterfly' when recording his final album, 'Blackstar.' "We were listening to a lot of Kendrick Lamar," said Tony Visconti, Bowie's longtime producer, in a recently resurfaced interview with Rolling Stone. "We wound up with nothing like that, but we loved the fact Kendrick was so open-minded and he didn’t do a straight-up hip-hop record. He threw everything on there, and that’s exactly what we wanted to do. The goal, in many, many ways, was to avoid rock & roll." Bowie released 'Blackstar' on January 8, 2016, his 69th birthday and just two days before his passing. __ (slide 1) via @Rolling Stone (slide 3) via @Clash Magazine #pigeonsandplanes #davidbowie #kendricklamar #topimpabutterfly #blackstar
