Fashion has shown little respect for garment workers or for the waste it creates. But the people who make our clothes have always held the solutions. Sustainability does not work without centering garment workers. Their labor, skill, and leadership are essential to repairing what this industry has broken. One year ago, after the LA fires, garment workers stepped up when systems failed. Together, they collected over 120,000 pounds of unwanted donated textiles and began the long work of sorting, repairing, remaking, and redistributing them instead of letting them end up in landfills. This is disaster relief after the headlines fade. This is what care looks like when it is rooted in labor, dignity, and community. SUAY is building a different model.
