Did you know San Francisco played a pivotal role in KAWS’s early street art practice?
These photographs are from a trip to San Francisco in 1997 where he learned about a tool that gave him access to bus shelter and phone-booth advertisements—building on ad interventions he had already begun making in New York.
KAWS removed original posters from their vitrines, brought them home, carefully painted over them, and then returned them to their original encasements.
