🌿 A WILDY successful release: meet Maya the Bonobo! Orphaned in 1995, she was rescued by Friends of Bonobos of Congo and taken to their sanctuary - lolayabonobo - the world's only sanctuary dedicated to protecting these Endangered great apes. Bonobos are found only in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and are threatened by illegal hunting and habitat destruction. Maya lost her own family at a young age, but as she matured, she took to caring for other Bonobos in her troop. Over time, she became the matriarch, making her an ideal candidate for release back into the wild. Maya and her troop now roam freely in the 120,000-acre Ekolo ya Bonobo Community Reserve--the only bonobo rewilding site in the world.
