spent today making something of an informal recording of liam's four bagatelles. i was thinking this morning that it felt like it was about this time last year i did the same thing with all of bosba's music, and it turns out it was almost exactly a year to the date (june 12, 2021). bosba is how i came to know liam's music and in both cases it's been unjust that the never ending pandemic has taken away so many opportunities for folks to hear the beauty of their respective work.
i have spent a lot of time the last 2.5 years listening to the very late brahms piano pieces, and in the deranged way that i do thinking about how something along those lines would work well as a guitar piece. i'm very thankful liam has put together such an expressive and expansive collection of four bagatelles. these pieces have many of my favorite characteristics of brahms' music: subtle shadings and differences of repeated ideas, optimistic gloom, rich and detailed scores, etc. it might look on the page to be...
