one time npr asked #pianist #jermeydenk why he practices technique and his answer was so we dont have to later. one of the neat things about my time at nec was seeing how jerome and grisha and to a lesser extent eliot approach the often monotonous task of practicing technical stuff. they all really instill that technical practice should be a scientific yet creative exploration of everything thats possible on the instrument, practicing every possibility so that when it comes up in the music you don’t have to worry about it. this is one of jerome/grisha's exercises they both do. the base is the first video, 1234 4321 and then an open string. zooming up and down the fretboard. it's important to practice and explore every possible permutation of 2 (ex. 13, 31, 0) 3 (ex. 124, 421, 0) and 4 (1324 4231 0) group outcomes. ive got a sheet where ive listed them all out (s/o google sheets). the second video is one such wacky challenge. i did 214 412 0 in the left hand and tremolo (pami) in the...
