one of the things practicing scales is good for is bringing awareness of the physical sensation of each moving finger into your focus. while not the most fun to listen to, this simple exercise provides a great opportunity to observe how each finger in both hands feels when in contact with the string. much like feeling contact points with the floor and your seat is a way of grounding yourself in meditation and life, noting how each finger feels when striking the string is another way of feeling more comfortable when performing. better still, becoming aware of how the fingers feel brings to your focus the work each finger is doing when playing and provides an intention for the motion. moving with purpose and grace is the name of the game. normally i go all the way down and all the way back up but who really wants to listen to that. when descending i usually focus on the feeling in my right hand and when ascending the left. i do all finger combos in the right hand. please ignore how unb...
