On October 30, 1870 brothers Robert and Samuel Fox, as well as their business partner Horace Pearce, boarded a Louisville streetcar, challenging the legality of streetcar companies’ segregation policies. After several days of protest, Louisville Mayor John George Baxter Jr. led negotiations between Louisville’s Black citizens and the managers of the streetcar companies. The result was the ending of segregation of Louisville streetcars.
