This remote isle in the Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary is an important resting place—known as a haul-out—for male Pacific walruses, which gather by the thousands every summer to feed and recuperate after mating season. The textured nodules on male walruses’ skin, called bosses, become more pronounced as the animals age.
