While working on a radiator in the lobby, our building engineers recently discovered a flyer that had been hiding for decades advertising the Jane Addams Bookstore! 📚 The bookstore first opened in December 1976 and moved into the Fine Arts Building in the early ‘80s. Named after Hull House founder and Chicagoan Jane Addams, it was owned by friends Nancy Finke and Flora Foraci, who met in a women’s support group. They dreamed of a place where women could not only buy feminist literature but also gather, talk, and celebrate. They specialized in books by and about women, including small-print titles and a large used collection. Buyers could also find non-traditional children’s books, purchase posters and art by Chicago women creators, submit a request for rare and out-of-print titles, and revel in Nancy’s culinary confections!
