Everyone, Everywhere, All at Once. 🌎 This “pale blue dot” captured by our Voyager 1 spacecraft shows our home, Planet Earth, from about 3.7 billion miles (6 billion km) away. Taken 33 years ago today, this was one of Voyager 1’s last sights; mere minutes later, the spacecraft’s cameras were deactivated to preserve power. The popular name of this image comes from astronomer Carl Sagan, who originated the idea of using Voyager's cameras to photograph the distant Earth and other planets, playing a critical role in enabling the “family portrait” images of solar siblings to be taken.
