It’s #StormSurvivorSunday, and this infamous Galveston #StormSurvivor has been getting well-deserved attention after archaeologists and students from Texas A&M Galveston hosted a community excavation day this weekend! 🏴‍☠️ What “treasures” do you think they uncovered? Often referred to as the home of the infamous Galveston pirate Jean Lafitte and known as the Maison Rouge, the foundation remaining on this site was actually constructed long after Lafitte sailed away from the island around 1821. The foundation you see today was built near Lafitte’s former home by Captain Frederick William Hendricks and became known as the house of 12 gables. Historic maps and articles show it was perfectly positioned on the water, with a central turret offering views of the port. In 1948, Galveston Isle magazine featured the home not long before it was demolished—proof that the lore surrounding the house was alive even then.
