The internet can transform lives, opening up worlds of knowledge and opportunity. Yet only about 7% of Nigeria’s population has ready and reliable access to it. Looking to boost those numbers, a team of volunteers has been building a series of hotspots across the country—and strategically positioning them to provide internet access to as many residents, university students, and government institutions as possible.
But the team had to get innovative in some cases, like tapping the Google Earth app to figure out the best coverage spots, says Gbolade Bankole, PMP, senior network engineer at VDT Communications Ltd. When the team couldn’t find a building that fit its parameters, it constructed its own purpose-built bungalow.
