The world’s largest toymaker isn’t playing around when it comes to climate action: As part of its ambitious slate of projects to beat back emissions and rethink materials, Lego is building its first carbon-neutral factory.
Working in partnership with developer Vietnam Singapore Industrial Park Joint Venture Co. Ltd., Lego is designing the 44-hectare (109-acre) facility near Ho Chi Minh City with a blitz of eco-friendly features. It will accommodate electric vehicles, for instance, and more than 50,000 trees will be planted to compensate for vegetation removed during construction. Plus, meeting Asia’s surging demand for Lego products with a local factory means a shorter supply chain and less carbon-belching transport.
Adding another layer of positive social impact: The US$1 billion-plus project is expected to create up to 4,000 jobs over the next 15 years, with local employees upskilled to operate the high-tech production equipment.
