Since 1933, a cluster of historic buildings has stood in the Elwha River Valley, about twelve miles beyond the Whiskey Bend Trailhead. A landscape as wet as Olympic is not forgiving to wooden structures, and last summer the Elkhorn Guard Station and outbuildings were treated to some caring rehabilitation. Park crews replaced deteriorated cedar shake roofs and rotting beams, while respecting the distinct historical character of these buildings and the techniques that were used when they were built, 90 years before. The buildings connect us to our past while continuing to serve as a base of operations for backcountry rangers, scientists, trail crews, and volunteers. #PreservationMonth
