At Black Canyon, a 100-kilometer foot race in central Arizona, 62 miles of desert is all that lies between hundreds of runners and four Golden Tickets to Western States. The course is situated along the Black Canyon trail in the foothills of the Bradshaw Mountains. With a net downhill of a couple thousand feet, it’s a spectacle of speed, sharp climbs, and constantly changing difficulty. While the Black Canyon trail is notorious for breaking your rhythm with drainages, washes, and multiple crossings of the Agua Fria river, ericsenseman – or as some call him, Mr. Black Canyon – is one of the few who knows how to ebb and flow with the sporadic terrain. The course is one of his hometown training grounds, just an hour from his doorstep in Flagstaff.
