In 2019, Archie’s Hough Bakeries relocated to Beachwood. Cleveland Magazine journeyed with its owner, Archie Garner Sr., to see the new space, then-yet to be painted in its iconic baby blue and icing-white colors.
If it weren’t for Garner, the 120-year-old legacy would have crumbled like a pastry after Hough Bakery’s initial fold in 1992. It’s famous white cakes—tight, moist crumbles and luscious, silky icing, with a hint of almond—would have been lost to time’s insatiable appetite. 🍰
As Clevelanders discovered Garner’s shop, with a little help from local columnist Mary Strassmeyer, cars began appearing from counties across Ohio. 🚗
“This one lady just took a bite and started crying,” Garner remembers. “She says, ‘I didn’t think I’d ever taste this again.’”
